How To Pack Up A House For Moving

31 March 2022

Moving home can be a tiring and monotonous task, especially if you don’t even know where to start. There’s so much that needs to be done that it’s not surprising if you get overwhelmed and just want to put the entire activity off. However, instead of letting packing anxiety get to you, take a look at our top tips for how to pack up a house for moving. Keep these in mind and you’re sure to be well on your way to having your home packed up in no time at all.

1. Tackle your home room by room

Packing up your belongings room by room is going to make your entire packing journey much easier and less stressful overall. It can be easy to become overwhelmed with everything that you need to pack if you’re flitting from item to item and not seeing any progress. Instead, pick a room and keep your focus there until it’s completed. This will also make unpacking at your new home much easier as most of your boxes should be grouped by room.

2. Get rid of anything you don’t use or need anymore

It’s no secret that we tend to accumulate a lot of belongings throughout our lives. Often, we don’t necessarily need or even use these items and they are simply taking up valuable space in our homes. Take the opportunity to complete a mass clean out of your belongings while you are packing and get rid of anything you no longer want, need or use. Not only is this a great way to spring clean your belongings, but it will make packing and moving much easier as well.

3. Have all of your packing supplies organised

There’s nothing more frustrating or off-putting than getting halfway through your packing and realising that you have run out of boxes or essential packing supplies . This is often the perfect excuse to waste time and not focus on getting your belongings all packed up and ready for the move. Whether you decide that you're going to purchase all of your boxes from a packing company or you source them from local businesses, it's often best to purchase more than what you think you're going to need.

4. Pack up your least-used items first

It can get pretty confusing trying to figure out where to start when you’re packing. Make it easier on yourself by beginning with the items that you use least and aren’t likely to need in the next few weeks. Think seasonal clothing, CDs, books etc. This will allow you to get all the small stuff out of the way first and make packing with a plan much easier.

5. Break down your larger items last

Finally, once you have the majority of your smaller belongings packed away, you will want to break down and pack your larger items last. This can include things like bookshelves, beds and other flat-pack furniture. Breaking these items down last will be easier as by this point, you should have packed up anything that was stored on them. Breaking furniture down will also make it easier to carry and transport .
