Types Of Packing Materials

If you’re planning to pack your house yourself, it’s important to ensure you’ve got all the packing supplies you need when you start packing up your home. As well as boxes and tape, you’ll also need materials to protect fragile items and ensure that your movers know where to put your things in your new home.

Some of the most essential packing supplies to equip yourself with are:

  • Cardboard boxes to pack your things into. We recommend double-walled boxes, especially for heavier items like books and electronics
  • Packing tape to secure your boxes
  • Packing paper to pack fragile items in; this is usually the first layer before you surround them with bubble wrap
  • Bubble wrap to protect fragile items like glass and ceramics from breaking during the move
  • Marker pens, to label your boxes with so that you know what’s in them and your movers know where to put them in your new home
  • Moving blankets, which can help to protect large items during the move and prevent screens and mirrors from being scratched

We can supply and loan you packing supplies for your move. Not only does this reduce waste and lower the cost of moving, but it’s also easy and convenient if you’re moving with us.

How To Choose The Right Packing Supplies

The right packing supplies for your move depend on what you’re moving and how you want to pack it. For example, if you are relocating to a new area it is essential your items are packed with extra-protective packaging products to ensure they don't break during the transportation period. Consider the properties of the supplies that you choose and what you require from the packing materials that you opt for.

Boxes

Cardboard boxes come in all shapes and sizes. Most people require at least some larger boxes, for packing larger items in, and lots of medium boxes. If you need help estimating how many boxes you’ll need, we can help. We also recommend that you use at least some double-walled boxes, especially for heavier items.

Packing Tape

Make sure you use a good brand of packing tape to pack up your boxes, or you could risk them falling open at the worst possible moment. Packing tape should be strong and difficult to break - you can use it to add extra strength to boxes.

Bubble Wrap

Bubble wrap is available with bubbles of different sizes. Generally, bubble wraps with larger bubbles are better for larger items and bubble wraps with smaller bubbles are better for smaller items. You can also scrunch up packing paper between fragile items to add extra padding if you need it.

Pens And Labels

Labels and marker pens can help you to label your boxes both for yourself and for your movers. Use permanent markers or large, clear labels and make sure that you write as clearly as possible so that your movers know where to leave your boxes. This can save you a lot of work at the other end because you won’t need to move boxes around from room to room after the move.

At O’Grady’s, we provide a wide array of essential packing supplies for rent. This includes sturdy cardboard boxes for heavier items like books and electronics. We also offer packing tape for securing your boxes, packing paper and bubble wrap for fragile items, marker pens for labelling and moving blankets to protect large items during the move. • Can I Rent Packing Supplies Instead Of Buying Them?

Yes, renting packing supplies is a viable option we offer at O’Grady’s. Renting is not only more cost-effective than buying new but also reduces waste and environmental impact. When you rent from us, you gain access to higher-quality packing gear without the worry of what to do with these items post-move. Renting is a practical solution for those who prioritise efficiency, safety and sustainability in their moving process.

  • What Is The Best Way To Pack Boxes For Moving?

Packing boxes effectively is crucial for a successful move. Start by selecting the right size of boxes for different items. Use smaller boxes for heavy items and larger ones for lighter items. Ensure each box is not overloaded and can be comfortably lifted. Use packing paper or bubble wrap to fill any gaps in the boxes to prevent items from shifting during transit. Seal the boxes securely with strong packing tape and label each box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs to. This will make unpacking at your new home much more manageable.

  • What's The Best Way To Pack Fragile Items?

Packing fragile items requires extra care. Begin by wrapping each item individually in packing paper, followed by a layer of bubble wrap for added protection. Place these items in a box lined with more bubble wrap or crumpled packing paper for cushioning. Avoid overpacking the box to prevent pressure on the fragile items. Fill any remaining spaces with more bubble wrap or packing paper. Seal the box securely and label it 'fragile' to ensure it's handled with care during the move. It’s also advisable to keep these boxes separate from heavier items during transportation.

  • Do You Supply Boxes?

O'Grady's has plenty of specially made moving cartons you can purchase from us at a very affordable price. However, we don't provide these for free with the service.
