How To Plan And Organise In Preparation For Your Move

31 August 2021

Moving house can be a very exciting time. Making a new place your own while saying goodbye to your old memories can be a powerful fresh start. However, there is also so much to think about and organise that you may feel overwhelmed.

If you want to get on top of things before moving day, one of the most important checklist items is deciding whether you want to take all of your possessions with you.

Decluttering is a great way to reduce the effort and chaos associated with moving. Read on to find out how to plan and organise before you move.

Sort Mindfully

When you are moving, it can be tempting to just throw everything into boxes and go. But if you plan in advance, you can be a lot more mindful about it.

Organise

Separate boxes and bags into items you want to keep and items you wish to sell or give away for free. Make sure you also keep a bag for rubbish that won’t find a new home. You can keep anything that you use or that you especially love, but consider selling or donating anything you don’t.
If you are planning to donate to a charity, you can check to see if they would be willing to pick up larger items. Don’t forget also to check with family and friends to see if they want anything you have to give.

Know Your Area

Do you know when your hard rubbish day is coming up? If not, ask your council if they can be pick up your items to be taken away for you - this will certainly be more convenient than having to go to the tip yourself.
You never know - if you set out your items a little earlier than the collection day, you might find a new home for them with your neighbours.

Sell Locally

If you aren’t up for listing your items on sites such as eBay, then a good old fashioned garage sale is a great way to unload items you don’t want, while still making a little bit of money. You might not make a lot, but it will save you needing to move the items you don’t want!

Don't Throw Out Things You Love

Decluttering your home will make the cost of removal cheaper. As stated, smaller moves will require you to pay less, so it’s finally time to discard those useless items you’ve hoarded over the years.
Consider throwing away unloved, damaged, or unneeded items. You could even make extra cash by conducting a garden sale for unwanted clothes or other home items in good condition. This will cut down on how many boxes you need for your move and prevent you from paying more to transport items that will probably be dumped in the attic!
