How To Properly Pack Your Things For Self Storage

7 July 2022

Packing items for storage can easily get overwhelming, but there are small things you can do to simplify the process. Here are our top tips on how to get the most out of your packing...

Collect what you need

Before you start packing, it helps to have all your supplies on hand. Cardboard boxes, packing accessories, and protection for your items and boxes like bubble wrap or dust sheets, are all great items to have before you begin. You'll also need a lock to secure your unit after it's filled.

Make a list

Making an inventory list of all items you'll pack in your storage unit will easily help you remember what's been stored and where. You could even create a map of your unit once you're packed, assigning places for every box you'll store. Photos of your unit layout can further help you identify where things are.

Place your most-used items at the front

You may be needing some items in your unit sooner or more frequently than others. If you're moving house, for example, your furniture may be more important to access than your bric-a-brac. We recommend you store these items at the front of your unit so you can access them easily.

Make use of shelving

Shelving is a great solution for long-term storage. Not only will it help maximise your use of space, but it will also ensure you keep your unit organised. You can even store boxes on shelves to ensure ease of access.

Maximise vertical space

If something can be stored on its side - do it! This is a great way to free up space in your unit. Some tables, bikes, or lounges are able to be stored vertically. You can even use wardrobes to store those items that are harder to pack, like quilts or pillows, to really save on space.

Use boxes

Stackable boxes are a great asset. Labelling and colour coding your boxes based on their items will make moving, accessing or unpacking boxes much easier. Using boxes will also help you make the most of your unit space. When stacking your boxes, make sure you stack the heaviest boxes on the bottom and the lightest ones on the top. It's also important to be sure you can lift and move your boxes correctly after they're packed, to avoid any injury.

Create a walkway

Leaving a space or aisle in your unit will help ensure you can easily access the back and sides. This is especially beneficial for long-term storage , as you'll be able to reach items in the back and will make sure you've got enough room to access everything.

Use dust sheets

Dust sheets or even an old blanket really come in handy to protect your stuff. You can even place one on the floor of your unit before you begin moving your items.

Know your requirements

Flammable, hazardous or corrosive substances, food or live animals can't be stored in storage units, and it's important you're aware of what's permitted by your provider before you begin.

Consider an upgrade

Accommodating a bit of extra space in your unit definitely doesn't hurt. You'll have more space to move around inside and go through your boxes without running the risk of accident or injury.
