Things People Usually Forget When Moving House

10 June 2022

Moving house is a notoriously stressful experience. In addition to the physical labour of packing up all your belongings and loading them into a truck, you also have to deal with the logistical challenges of changing your address, transferring utilities, and forwarding your mail.
Here is your checklist of things people commonly forget when moving so you can be fully prepared and enjoy a stress-free moving experience:

Create a separate box for the essentials you will need immediately

This box should include all of the items that you will need to access immediately upon arriving at your new home - essential items such as toilet paper, hand soap, snacks, and a change of clothes. Including a few personal items such as photo albums or your favourite books can also be a good idea. By packing an essentials box, you can be sure that you will have everything you need to make your first few days in your new home as comfortable as possible.

Transfering school or medical records

If you have school-aged children, be sure to contact their school well in advance of the move to arrange for their records to be sent to their new school. Similarly, if you see a doctor or specialist regularly, be sure to make them aware of your upcoming move and ask them to send your medical records to your new doctor. Taking care of these details ahead of time will help ensure a smooth transition to your new home.

Remember everything that is NOT located at your house

Make a list of all the places where you have stored items, both inside and outside your home. This includes any storage units , sheds, garages, or even the attic or basement. Once you have compiled this list, take some time to walk through each room of your house and make note of any items that are not on the list but should be.
Next, reach out to any businesses or individuals who may be holding onto items for you, such as the dry cleaner or seamstress. Ask them to remind you to collect your items a few days before your move.
If you have stored anything at a friend's house, now is the time to retrieve it. The last thing you want is to have to make a special trip after you have moved. It is also important to return any keys that you may have for your old property. This includes keys for the mailbox, any gate or garage remote controls and any spares that you may have left with a neighbour.

Recording electricity readings

One of the most important things people usually forget when moving house is to take final meter readings and give them to their energy supplier. Providers will use these readings to calculate your final bill for the old property, as well as provide an estimate for your first bill at the new property. Without these readings, you may end up overpaying for your energy usage. Additionally, giving your new address and contact details to your energy supplier as soon as possible will help to ensure a smooth transition to your new home.

Prepare to move your house plants in advance

Start by ensuring they are well watered; this will help them to withstand the stress of being moved. Then, create a list of all the plants you need to move, and pack them up carefully in boxes or bags. Be sure to label each plant, so you know where it needs to go in your new home. Finally, transport your plants in a cool, shady spot in your car, and get them into their new pots or soil as soon as possible. With a little planning, you can make sure your house plants survive the move and thrive in their new home.
