If you're planning a move with kids, you might find yourself - and them - becoming stressed. The good thing is it doesn't need to be this way. Help your kids prepare for the unknown of a move or relocation with these simple steps.
Be upfront - but sensitive
When you're moving with kids, it's important you tell them about the move ahead of time - but in the right way, too. Ensure you're all together as a family when you share the news, and that your children know before their teachers or friends' parents who might end up spilling the beans.
When you're telling your kids about the move, it also pays to give them as much information as they need. This might include:
- your new address
- their new school
- the name of your new suburb
- the reason why you're moving
- where you, your spouse or your partner will be working
- what your new home looks like, if the kids haven't seen it yet
While these might seem like unnecessary details for kids, it does help to make them feel like they're part of the move. What's more, when they're asked about where they're moving, they'll be able to share information.
So you've told your kids about the move - but don't just leave it there. While moving may mean your kids are leaving a lot behind - school, friends, their home, and so on - it can also bring new and exciting things for them. Try and help your kids look forward to their new school, their new home, or the things they could do in the local area. It's also important to make clear that they're not moving by themselves. Tell them that you are going with them, along with any siblings, pets, or their favourite toys.
Visit your new neighbourhood
Take some time to visit your new area before you settle in. You might spend a weekend exploring, taking your kids past their new school, or enjoying the local attractions. This will help your kids get a sense of where they'll be living and might help to calm the nerves.
When you're packing, we know you want to declutter and clean up as much as you can. Moving can be stressful for everyone, even on kids, and it's important you maintain some familiarity and comfort for them. Make the effort to leave their favourite toys, blankets, or other items accessible and visible. This might create some inconvenience when it comes to packing, but it will also help your kids have an easier transition.
Packing can be long and tedious, and you can keep your kids occupied by letting them choose how they'd like their room decorated. Maybe they want a new wall colour, furniture, or bedspread. Involving them in fun projects will build their excitement ahead of the move.
Moving can be difficult for adults and kids alike. If you stay positive, your attitude will rub off on your kids.
