Moving's a big job - not just for you, but also for your removalist. If you're relocating, you might not be aware that there are things you can do to help your move flow as seamlessly as possible. Interested in learning more? Read on for our top tips guaranteed to make even the most complex move a breeze for your removalists.
Preparation, preparation, preparation
We can't say it enough - preparation is key for a successful move. You might think things can easily be left until the last minute, especially if you're engaging a removalist, but this will just lead to potential delays and inconvenience. Here's what you can do:
- Organise your items well in advance.
- Sort any items you don't need, that are just collecting dust, or that you didn't realise you had.
- Pack only the items you want to take with you.
- Separate any items you want to keep but don't want at your new home -
storage
might be the solution.
- Sell or donate any unwanted items that are still in good nick.
Now you've got an inventory, it's time to invest in
quality packing materials
. Your inventory will help you get an idea of how much material you'll need, and which kinds. Not all packaging is made equal, and you'll want sturdy, trustworthy boxes that won't break in transit or lead to your items being damaged.
Wondering how to pack smart? Here's what to do:
- Develop a strategy - you'll save time.
- Start packing in advance, packing the items you use least first.
- Always put heavier items at the bottom of your boxes.
- Don't overload boxes - you'll prevent injuries, breakages and damage.
- Limit free space within your boxes to keep items from moving.
There's really no better time than moving time to pull out the label-maker. Labelling helps you easily find your items and indicate to your removalists where things need to go and if items need to be handled with additional care.
If you've got large furniture or equipment items, take them apart. Doing this yourself ahead of time will make your move more efficient and cost-effective.
Empty your fridge and freezer the day before your move. You can make this easier by using your food and emptying anything left into Eskys or discarding it before you leave. As freezers can take a couple of hours to thaw out, it's a good idea to do this overnight. Lay towels beneath your fridge and freezer to collect any water that might leak.
